APPRAISALS
A Jewelry Appraisal is a document that represents the appraiser's opinion of the approximate value of the object described. This report is based upon comparison with merchandise of similar style and quality at the time of evaluation. Because appraisal and evaluation are somewhat objective, estimates of value may vary from one appraiser to another, such variances do not necessarily constitute error on the part of the appraiser.
We do two types of appraisals:
REPLACEMENT VALUE: This is the estimated price for which a similarly described property could be purchased if alike in quality of material and craftsmanship. An antique or period piece must be replaced with a comparable item of similar vintage, with wear to be expected. Replacement value is used for insuring jewelry in case it is lost or stolen.
ESTATE APPRAISAL: Fair market value is used for estate evaluation purposes and is an assessment based on what a willing buyer and seller would agree to without a forced sale. Generally, this is a lower value than insurance replacement appraisals. We offer estate appraisals for families when parents have passed away. This way family heirlooms can be divided equally. Our appraiser will counsel you on redesign possibilities should you decide to separate any pieces into multiple items or recycling the gold/platinum if the item is beyond repair. Our appraiser has sorted through boxes and boxes of very large collections, some with hundreds of jewelry items. The family members really appreciate knowing what's truly valuable and what's fun or costume jewelry. Your jewelry is insured and safeguarded when left overnight at Goldsmith

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHO IS THE APPRAISER? Kaye Irwin, the proprietor, is a graduate gemologist with over 33 years experience working with fine jewelry, and writing appraisals. Goldsmith Gallery has all the gem testing equipment needed to qualify as a gemological laboratory.
WHY IS THERE A CHARGE FOR AN APPRAISAL? You are paying for an expert’s opinion of the value and condition of your items. The education of the appraiser and time invested to research, study, measure, describe and evaluate items is a service that carries a price. The final document we produce for you is a professional service that takes time and therefore has value. Insurance companies do not accept appraisals unless done by a graduate gemologist.
DO I HAVE TO LEAVE MY JEWELRY? In most cases, YES. However, if you have three items or less and call for an appointment with the appraiser we can give your jewelry back to you the same day. The final document takes more time to prepare and will be ready within two days.
If there are four or more items, you will need to leave the jewelry with us for a few days as it will take more than one day to appraise multiple items.
DOES GOLDSMITH GALLERY JEWELERS BUY JEWELRY? NO, we don’t buy jewelry. However, you can consign your jewelry with us. (See the consignment section for details.)
If your jewelry is not is saleable condition, you can sell the gold to Goldsmith Gallery Jewelers for recycle value.
